Throughout the years, the women dreamed of opening their own bake shop, where Lisa’s sweet creations and practical business sense, and Casey’s kitchen knowledge and creative notions could add up to something meaningful. Lisa researched, developed business plans, and scouted for locations, until one summer day, she came upon a sign in the window at 17 South Main Street.

After months of hard work, test recipes, and stacks of permits and papers, Sweet Spice Bake Shop opened its doors on December 18, 2015, to the thunderous applause of the town of North East.

Together, the two women and their staff are grateful to offer gracious, personalized customer service, delicious treats, and a cozy atmosphere to anyone who walk through the door of Sweet Spice Bake Shop.

Lisa and Casey became fast friends in 2003, when Lisa, fresh from art school, worked at Steak and Main, and Casey owned a small bakery called Cinnamon Girl. Though their eventual career changes lead them in different directions, their friendship grew over dinner parties and excellent musical taste.

Lisa focused her energy on a career in the music industry, using her graphic design talents first working for a Baltimore based radio station, and eventually landing a position with the York, Pennsylvania based band, Live. Though she enjoyed the hustle and glamour of touring, she discovered a love of baking, a hobby that soon blossomed into a cottage enterprise. Soon, she was the unofficial Cupcake Queen, developing custom flavors for her friends, and receiving rave reviews.

After spending a few years as a stay at home mom, Casey ventured back into the professional kitchen. After a stint at a newly opened micro-brewery in Delaware, she found her place at Movable Feast, an a la carte gourmet takeout shop in Wilmington. The friendly customers and creative freedom were wonderful, but something kept calling her home.

At Sweet Spice, we know that quality products begin with quality ingredients, which is why you won’t find any chemicals or preservatives in our kitchen.

 

We use only real, fresh eggs, butter, and milk, and buy locally when possible. We also believe, as a small business, that supporting other local businesses is our responsibility. Our herbs, spices, and coffee come from Wyre Naturals and Beans, Leaves, Etc., and we purchase our candy toppers from North East Chocolates.

 

Our signature Salted Caramel Pretzel Cupcakes, Potato Chip Cookies, and Fig and Walnut Bread can be found in the shop daily, along with gluten free brownies and lemon bars. Our other case options vary daily, and we prefer to use seasonal ingredients whenever possible.

 

Though we offer many sweet options, we also enjoy baking savory treats! Weekend options sometimes include savory scones, strata, quiche, or muffins, all wonderful for a quick breakfast while you window shop in town.

 

If you have dietary restrictions, we’re happy to take custom orders for vegan, dairy free, low sugar, or gluten free items. We believe that everyone has the right to a delicious baked treat!
